The photographer I chose was Mary Ellen Mark, who took this photo of Maya Angelou. In the photo, the light is coming from the lamp, and there is natural light from the window in the back. The subject is in a lying position on a couch, looking towards a picture of what appears to be her younger self. The photo appears to be in a living room in an apartment. The photographer is looking up to the subject and is at a close distance. The lighting, position of model, and expression on face communicate that the subject years of a simpler time when she was younger.
Portraits
The first photo I will be touching upon is the lower middle picture. There was an overhead light, but a golden reflector was used to get a yellowish light. The light falls upon the model's face and chest. The shadows are towards the left side of her face. The model is situated on a stool looking up towards the light in a head shot. The photo was horizontal and I shot below the model about a foot away from her. The photo communicates a feeling of bliss and the looking up to the light represents better times ahead. The photo is candid, so it shows the model's natural happiness. A photo this contrasts with is the upper right with a more of a darker, serious tone that the model gives off.
Aperture
My favorite image with a shallow depth of field is the photo of the typewriter. My f-stop was on 1.8 , my ISO was on 100, and my white balance was on daylight. My favorite image with a large depth of field was the photo of the teacup with the glass and the rose. My f-stop was on 16, my ISO was on 100, and my white balance was on daylight. I believe my image with the large depth of field is better. If you wanted to focus on one object, you would use a shallow depth of field. If you wanted to focus on multiple objects, you would use a large depth of field.
Photo Essay
The subject for my photo essay is a local plant sanctuary in my town. I selected this place because I believe it is a hidden gem for natural beauty in the local area that needed to be showcased. My concept was to develop a photo-journalistic view of the garden shop, almost as if I am photographing for them. The photos promote what the sanctuary has to offer, capturing almost a "blog-like" feel to it. I arranged the photos to make it feel as if the viewer is taking a walk through the garden shop, starting and ending at the doors. I believe the 8th photo is the strongest due to its symmetry and contrast. This photo is taken at low angle with dim lighting coming through the glass windows. To edit this photo, I increased the saturation, contrast, and clarity, and I decreased the exposure.
